Autumn wedding, Cantley House Hotel, Wokingham

The fabulous Lucy and Tom got married at Cantley House Hotel in October 2019. It was a beautifully, elegant autumnal affair with so many stand out moments. We absolutely loved their Bohemian decorations which worked so well with our 17th century converted barn and mature English gardens. Here we have detailed their story through the fantastic photography provided by Ross Hurley Photography and through the couples own words.

How many venues did you view before you booked Cantley House Hotel?

We looked at endless venues online. We managed to look at a few informally by going along to wedding fairs held at each venue. Eventually we narrowed it down to four wedding venues and Cantley House Hotel came out on top. We booked in to formally visit all four, but were sold on Cantley House Hotel on the first visit.

Why did you choose Cantley House Hotel as your wedding venue?

On that first visit we knew Cantley House Hotel was the venue for us. It had a great atmosphere and we immediately felt relaxed. It was the perfect balance and just ticked all the boxes for us – a beautiful barn, rooms on site for guests to stay, a midnight curfew and dog friendly too! Not to mention the beautiful grounds, which set a perfect backdrop to our autumnal wedding day.

Did you have a church wedding or civil ceremony and why?

We had a civil ceremony. We wanted to keep the ceremony really intimate and the Oak Room at Cantley House Hotel created the perfect setting. A number of our guests commented on how warm, relaxed and welcoming the Ceremony felt at Cantley, and having our own vows and our family dogs present as a flower girl and the ring bearer was perfect!

What advice would you give other couples getting married at Cantley House?

Make sure you make your day your own! Some venues can be quite limiting and stick within very set packages. Cantley House Hotel were so flexible, we had a completely unique package put together with Nadia and the team during our meetings. We were able to pick our favourite options from any package and also add unique touches – such as our cream tea reception, complete with our whiteboard for voting (the cream or jam first debate still rages on!). Nothing was too much trouble

Was there a theme to your wedding and what were your decorations?

Our theme was Bohemian/Rustic and had an autumnal colour scheme. For the Ceremony room my Auntie made beautiful hessian bunting with lace added in my Mum’s wedding dress, and forest green to match the scheme. We used a cream aisle runner, aisle ends had poseys of gypsophila and simple lace chair ties. The bunting continued into the barn and hung with festoon lighting, along with the beams and columns dressed in rustic foliage. Our center pieces were bouquets of flowers in milk churns, small scented tea lights and tied poseys of gypsophila in jars wrapped in hessian and lace, all on log slices. Our table names we made ourselves and were vinyl records labelled with some of our favourite songs. Guests signed these and we have kept these to hand in frames at home.

Did you have a DJ or band and why?

We had a brilliant band called The Flyaways. They played one folk and one electric set and kept the floor packed all night. We chose a band over a DJ because it was really important to us that there was a real party atmosphere and guests danced all night. Having played in bands ourselves and being huge live music fans also, we felt a live band would bring the atmosphere we were after, and The Flyways truly delivered!

What was the favourite part of your day and why?

That’s a tough question! It’s really hard to pick a favourite moment as the whole thing felt perfect. Having all of our family and closest friends together for such a wonderful day of celebration was so magical, and is the best memory ever. If we were pushed to pick our favourite part, it would probably be the ceremony – it’s the reason you are all there together, and it’s the moment you’ve been waiting for. Ours felt so relaxed, intimate and joyful. Having ours at Cantley House Hotel meant both the family dogs could be part of it too, as a flower girl and a perfect surprise ring bearer.

Who was your favourite wedding supplier and why?

All of our suppliers were amazing and really brought our day to life, but if we had to choose, it would have to be our Photographer Ross Hurley. He was a pleasure throughout and has given us beautiful photos that will last a lifetime.
